Born and raised in a modest family in Kerala, India, Dr. Ananda came to the United States with little more than an education, determination, and a dream. A JOURNEY BEGINS

My journey began in a small town in Kerala, India. My parents were not wealthy, but they taught me lessons that shaped my entire life—integrity, education, perseverance, humility, and service to others.

Education became my passport to opportunity. I pursued engineering in India before coming to the United States to study aerospace engineering, ultimately earning graduate degrees in engineering and later a law degree. Each stage of that journey reinforced an important lesson: learning should never stop.

Early in my career, I had the privilege of working on some of the world’s most challenging aerospace problems. At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, I contributed to optical navigation systems supporting missions including Voyager, Viking, Pioneer, and Mariner. Later, at The Aerospace Corporation, I worked on technologies related to the Global Positioning System (GPS), an experience that profoundly influenced how I approached complex systems and innovation.

Those experiences taught me that solving difficult problems requires disciplined thinking, collaboration, and the courage to challenge conventional assumptions.

Engineering also teaches systems thinking. Every business is a system made up of customers, technology, finance, people, regulation, and execution. Success comes from understanding how those parts interact rather than focusing on any one component in isolation.

That mindset helped me recognize opportunities where technology could solve meaningful problems long before markets fully appreciated them.

BELIEVING IN STAMPS.COM BEFORE OTHERS DID

One of the defining moments of my entrepreneurial journey was helping create Stamps.com.

At the time, the idea sounded unrealistic to many investors. The concept of printing official U.S. postage directly from a personal computer seemed impossible. We heard “no” many times.

But innovation often appears obvious only in hindsight.

We believed that the Internet would fundamentally change how people interacted with businesses and government services. We were convinced that convenience would eventually overcome skepticism.

Persistence ultimately proved more important than initial acceptance. Stamps.com went on to become one of the pioneers of Internet commerce, raising substantial capital, becoming a public company, and later being acquired in a multibillion-dollar transaction. That experience reinforced one of the most important lessons of entrepreneurship: If everyone already believes your vision, you are probably too late. Great innovations usually begin as ideas that many people initially dismiss.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: THE NEXT GREAT TRANSFORMATION

Artificial intelligence represents one of the most significant technological transformations since the Internet. Like every transformative technology, AI offers extraordinary opportunities and important responsibilities.

Artificial intelligence will influence nearly every profession, every business, every scientific discipline, and virtually every aspect of daily life. Healthcare, education, law, finance, engineering, manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, scientific research, and government will all be transformed. The question is no longer whether AI will change our world. The real question is how we choose to guide that transformation.

Throughout my career, I have worked at the intersection of several technological revolutions—from aerospace engineering and satellite navigation to Internet commerce and digital healthcare. One lesson has remained remarkably consistent: technology itself is neither good nor bad. Its impact depends entirely on how thoughtfully and responsibly we choose to use it.

Artificial intelligence is no different.

Understandable excitement surrounds AI because it can analyze information at unprecedented speed, recognize complex patterns, automate repetitive tasks, and help people make better-informed decisions. These capabilities have enormous potential to improve productivity, accelerate scientific discovery, and solve problems that have challenged humanity for generations.

But AI should never be viewed as a substitute for human wisdom.
It should be viewed as a powerful extension of human capability.

One misconception I encounter is the idea that artificial intelligence will replace people. I believe the future is more nuanced. AI will certainly automate many routine tasks, just as previous technologies automated manual labor and repetitive office work. However, the qualities that make us uniquely human—judgment, empathy, ethics, creativity, compassion, intuition, and moral responsibility—will become even more valuable.

The future does not belong to artificial intelligence alone.

It belongs to people who know how to work intelligently with artificial intelligence.

For entrepreneurs, this distinction matters most.

Many companies today describe themselves as “AI companies.” I think that is the wrong perspective.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming what electricity became during the twentieth century—a foundational capability rather than a competitive advantage on its own. No company today advertises that it uses electricity. In the future, companies will not succeed simply because they use AI. They will succeed because they apply AI in ways that solve meaningful human problems better than anyone else.

That is why I encourage entrepreneurs to begin with the problem, not the technology.

Too often, startups ask:

“How can we use AI?”

A far better question is:

“What important human problem remains unsolved, and how can AI help solve it responsibly?”

That change in thinking leads to far more meaningful innovation.

Responsibility, however, must remain central to every AI application.

As AI becomes increasingly capable, entrepreneurs carry responsibilities that extend beyond creating successful businesses. They are helping shape systems that may influence millions—or even billions—of people. That requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, privacy, security, fairness, and continuous oversight.

Trust is built when people understand how technology supports decisions rather than replacing them.

This principle has guided my work in healthcare through DRAI Health.

Healthcare is one of the most complex and deeply human professions. Patients do not simply seek information; they seek reassurance, compassion, understanding, and confidence during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. AI can process enormous amounts of medical information, identify patterns that clinicians might not immediately recognize, and help patients monitor their health more effectively. But a diagnosis is only one part of medicine. Caring for another human being requires empathy, judgment, communication, and trust.

For that reason, I have always believed that AI should function as an intelligent clinical partner, not an autonomous replacement for physicians. It should help clinicians spend less time on administrative burdens and more time doing what only human beings can do—listening, understanding, explaining, and caring for patients.

I believe the same principle applies across every profession.

The objective should not be to remove people from important decisions.
The objective should be to help people make better decisions.

This distinction becomes particularly important as AI systems become more powerful. Human oversight should remain an essential safeguard, especially in fields where decisions affect health, safety, justice, or financial well-being. Responsible AI is not simply about writing ethical guidelines; it is about designing systems that are transparent, explainable, auditable, and accountable.

Another aspect of AI that deserves attention is its potential to democratize opportunity.

Throughout history, access to expertise has often depended upon geography, education, or financial resources. Artificial intelligence can make high-quality knowledge far more accessible. A student in a small village can learn from world-class educational resources. A rural physician can access advanced clinical insights. A small business owner can use sophisticated analytical tools previously available only to large corporations.

Used responsibly, AI can help reduce inequalities rather than widen them.

However, that outcome is not guaranteed. It depends upon the choices entrepreneurs, policymakers, educators, and society make today.

As entrepreneurs, we must therefore ask ourselves a broader question:

Are we building technology that merely increases efficiency, or are we building technology that genuinely improves people’s lives?

The answer to that question will determine the lasting value of our innovations.

When I speak with young entrepreneurs, I often remind them that every generation inherits extraordinary technologies. Our generation’s responsibility is to ensure those technologies strengthen humanity rather than diminish it.

The companies that will have the greatest long-term impact will not necessarily be those with the most sophisticated algorithms. They will be the ones that earn trust.

Trust has always been the foundation of every successful enterprise.

  • Customers trust companies with their personal information.
  • Patients trust physicians with their health.
  • Citizens trust institutions with their rights.
  • Investors trust entrepreneurs with their capital.

Artificial intelligence will never eliminate the importance of trust. In fact, it will make trust more valuable than ever before.

Looking ahead, I remain profoundly optimistic.

Artificial intelligence gives us an opportunity to solve problems that previous generations could only imagine—from accelerating medical discoveries and personalizing education to improving environmental sustainability and expanding scientific knowledge. But realizing that potential will require leaders who combine technological ambition with ethical responsibility.

Ultimately, I do not believe the future will be defined by artificial intelligence alone. It will be defined by human intelligence enhanced by artificial intelligence. That partnership—not competition—will create the next great era of innovation.

If there is one message I hope entrepreneurs remember, it is this:

Build AI that makes people wiser, healthier, more productive, and more compassionate—not simply more efficient. Technology reaches its highest purpose when it amplifies the very qualities that make us human.
