Human civilization has experienced a number of profound technological transformations, but only a few have fundamentally changed the structure of everyday life. The discovery and widespread use of electricity was one such transformation. Artificial intelligence, in my view, will be another—possibly even greater.

I have written previously about this subject in my book Life with AI, but I now believe that what we are seeing today is only the beginning. We are still in the embryonic stage of the AI revolution. The systems that impress us today may eventually look primitive compared with what will become possible over the coming decades.

There are many people who speak about artificial intelligence in terms of fear. Some predict widespread unemployment. Others warn of financial bubbles created by excessive investment. Some go even further and speculate about an AI “doomsday” in which machines somehow overwhelm or replace humanity.

I believe much of this fear arises from underestimating the broader transformation that AI will create.

The central question should not be, “What will AI eliminate?”

The more important question is:

What will AI enable humanity to become?

AI and the Electricity Analogy

Before electricity became widely available, civilization had already developed remarkable achievements. Humanity built cities, governments, universities, industries, railroads, ships, literature, medicine, and scientific institutions.

Yet once electricity became part of society, virtually everything changed.

Electric lighting transformed homes and cities. Electric motors transformed manufacturing. Refrigeration transformed food distribution. Telecommunications transformed communication. Electronics eventually transformed computing, transportation, entertainment, medicine, commerce, and nearly every modern industry.

Electricity did not simply create another industry.

It became the infrastructure upon which thousands of industries were rebuilt.

Artificial intelligence will likely follow a similar path.

AI should not be viewed merely as another technology sector alongside software, biotechnology, transportation, or healthcare.

AI will become a foundational capability embedded throughout virtually every sector of the global economy.

Just as electricity eventually became invisible because it was everywhere, artificial intelligence may eventually become so integrated into daily life that people will stop thinking of it as “AI.”

It will simply become part of how civilization operates.

We Are Still at the Beginning

Today, most people encounter artificial intelligence primarily through conversational assistants, search tools, image generation, coding systems, recommendation engines, and increasingly sophisticated business applications.

These applications are important, but they represent only the earliest phase.

The true transformation will occur when AI becomes continuously connected to the physical and digital world.

AI will increasingly interact with:

  • Robotics;
  • Healthcare systems;
  • Scientific laboratories;
  • Transportation networks;
  • Financial systems;
  • Educational institutions;
  • Energy grids;
  • Manufacturing;
  • Agriculture;
  • Government services;
  • Personal devices;
  • Homes;
  • Vehicles;
  • Satellites;
  • Wearable technologies.

Eventually, intelligent systems will operate continuously around us, helping individuals and institutions make better decisions.

The transformation will therefore extend far beyond computing.

It will affect the fundamental organization of society.

Healthcare May Experience One of the Greatest Transformations

Healthcare provides an especially powerful example.

Today, access to medical expertise remains uneven. Patients may wait weeks or months for appointments. Physicians must process enormous amounts of medical information while spending significant time on documentation and administrative work.

Artificial intelligence can dramatically change this environment.

In the future, every individual may have access to an intelligent healthcare companion capable of continuously helping manage health.

Such systems may help individuals:

  • Understand symptoms;
  • Monitor chronic diseases;
  • Interpret laboratory results;
  • Organize medical records;
  • Identify health risks earlier;
  • Remind patients about medications;
  • Monitor wearable devices;
  • Prepare for physician appointments;
  • Provide preventive-health recommendations.

For physicians, AI may help synthesize medical histories, identify patterns across thousands of data points, summarize clinical encounters, compare treatment alternatives, and monitor patients remotely.

The result should not be a healthcare system without physicians.

It should be a healthcare system in which physicians become far more capable because machines handle much of the information processing that currently consumes their time.

The combination of human judgment and artificial intelligence could ultimately produce healthcare that is more preventive, personalized, accessible, and affordable.

Education Could Become Truly Personalized

For centuries, education has largely been organized around groups.

One teacher teaches twenty, thirty, or hundreds of students simultaneously.

But every student learns differently.

Artificial intelligence can potentially give every student something previously available only to the wealthy:

A personal tutor.

An AI educational system could understand:

  • What the student already knows;
  • What the student does not understand;
  • How quickly the student learns;
  • Which explanations work best;
  • Where the student is losing interest;
  • What subjects inspire curiosity.

The system could then adapt continuously.

A child in a remote village could potentially have access to educational guidance comparable with that available at the finest schools in the world.

This could represent one of the greatest democratizations of knowledge in human history.

AI Will Accelerate Scientific Discovery

Another extraordinary impact will occur in science.

Scientific progress has historically been constrained by the amount of information individual researchers can absorb and the speed at which experiments can be designed and conducted.

Artificial intelligence can analyze enormous datasets, identify relationships humans may overlook, generate hypotheses, simulate alternatives, and assist researchers in designing experiments.

AI could accelerate discoveries in:

  • Medicine;
  • Materials science;
  • Energy;
  • Chemistry;
  • Physics;
  • Climate science;
  • Genetics;
  • Aerospace;
  • Agriculture.

Instead of replacing scientists, AI may allow scientists to explore vastly larger intellectual spaces.

Human curiosity combined with machine-scale analysis could dramatically accelerate the rate at which civilization discovers new knowledge.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Productivity

Much discussion about AI focuses on jobs disappearing.

Technology has always changed employment.

Agricultural mechanization dramatically reduced the percentage of people required to produce food.

Factories transformed craft production.

Computers eliminated many clerical processes.

The internet disrupted retail, publishing, banking, travel, communications, and entertainment.

Yet each technological transformation also created industries and professions that previous generations could barely imagine.

Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly automate many activities currently performed by humans.

But this does not necessarily mean that human usefulness will decline.

The more likely transformation is that the relationship between humans and work will change.

Many repetitive tasks—administrative work, scheduling, routine analysis, documentation, data entry, basic customer service, and numerous forms of information processing—will increasingly be performed by intelligent systems.

Humans may therefore spend proportionally more time on activities requiring:

  • Creativity;
  • Empathy;
  • Leadership;
  • Judgment;
  • Entrepreneurship;
  • Strategy;
  • Scientific curiosity;
  • Interpersonal relationships;
  • Artistic expression;
  • Service to others.

This is not merely increased productivity.

It could represent increased human freedom.

AI May Give Humanity Something Extremely Valuable: Time

For most of human history, enormous portions of life have been consumed simply maintaining existence.

Producing food.

Traveling.

Managing households.

Keeping records.

Performing calculations.

Searching for information.

Completing administrative tasks.

Technology gradually reduced these burdens.

Artificial intelligence could accelerate that process dramatically.

Imagine a world in which intelligent assistants manage much of the routine complexity surrounding everyday life:

  • Organizing schedules;
  • Coordinating travel;
  • Managing finances;
  • Handling administrative paperwork;
  • Monitoring homes;
  • Assisting with healthcare;
  • Finding information;
  • Communicating across languages;
  • Helping manage businesses.

The result could be something profoundly important.

People may gain more time to enjoy:

  • Family;
  • Friendship;
  • Nature;
  • Travel;
  • Creativity;
  • Learning;
  • Physical activity;
  • Art;
  • Music;
  • Intellectual exploration;
  • Philanthropy;
  • Community.

In that sense, the ultimate benefit of artificial intelligence may not be intelligence itself.

It may be freedom.

Freedom from many of the repetitive obligations that have consumed human time for centuries.

The Enormous Investment in AI Should Not Surprise Us

Some critics point to the enormous capital being invested in artificial intelligence infrastructure and argue that such investment cannot be sustained.

Billions—and increasingly hundreds of billions—are being spent on:

  • Data centers;
  • Semiconductors;
  • Computing infrastructure;
  • Energy;
  • Networking;
  • AI models;
  • Robotics;
  • Research;
  • Software platforms.

It is entirely possible that individual companies will overinvest. Some AI companies will undoubtedly fail. Valuations will fluctuate. Technologies will become obsolete. Financial markets will periodically become overly optimistic and then overly pessimistic.

That is the normal process of technological transformation.

The important distinction is between questioning the valuation of individual companies and questioning the long-term importance of artificial intelligence itself.

They are not the same thing.

During major technological revolutions, enormous infrastructure must be constructed before society can fully benefit.

Railroads required massive capital.

Electrification required power plants, transmission networks, wiring, factories, and appliances.

The internet required fiber-optic cables, telecommunications networks, data centers, servers, and eventually billions of connected devices.

Artificial intelligence similarly requires enormous infrastructure.

In my opinion, the extraordinary level of investment should therefore not automatically be viewed as evidence that AI is a bubble.

It may instead reflect the scale of the infrastructure necessary to support a technological transformation that will ultimately touch almost every economic activity.

The faster society builds that infrastructure, the faster many of the benefits may become available.

The Genie Is Already Out of the Bottle

There is another reality that is sometimes overlooked.

Artificial intelligence cannot simply be uninvented.

The underlying knowledge now exists.

Researchers throughout the world understand the principles.

Governments understand its strategic importance.

Companies understand its economic value.

Students are learning how to build increasingly powerful systems.

Open-source communities are distributing AI technologies globally.

The genie is already out of the bottle.

Even if one country attempted to stop AI development, others would continue.

The realistic question is therefore not whether mankind will develop increasingly capable artificial intelligence.

We almost certainly will.

The real challenge is ensuring that we develop it responsibly.

AI Risks Are Real—but Manageable

I do not believe that optimism requires ignoring risk.

Artificial intelligence can be misused.

It can facilitate:

  • Fraud;
  • Misinformation;
  • Cybercrime;
  • Manipulation;
  • Surveillance;
  • Weapons development;
  • Economic disruption.

Systems can also make errors.

Biases can be embedded into algorithms.

Individuals may become excessively dependent upon automated recommendations.

These are serious concerns.

But civilization has confronted serious risks surrounding virtually every transformative technology.

Electricity can kill.

Automobiles cause accidents.

Aircraft can crash.

Pharmaceuticals can cause harmful side effects.

The internet enables both extraordinary communication and extraordinary misinformation.

Nuclear technology can generate electricity or destroy cities.

Human beings responded by creating engineering standards, regulations, professional institutions, safety systems, laws, and cultural expectations.

Artificial intelligence will require the same process.

The appropriate response to risk is not abandonment of progress.

It is responsible development.

Human Judgment Will Remain Essential

One misconception about AI is that increasing machine intelligence necessarily reduces the importance of human beings.

I believe the opposite may occur.

AI can provide information.

But humans determine purpose.

AI can calculate alternatives.

Humans determine values.

AI can optimize systems.

Humans determine what should be optimized.

AI may help diagnose disease.

Human beings still provide compassion.

AI may help manage businesses.

Human beings establish the mission.

AI may generate enormous quantities of knowledge.

Human beings must decide how that knowledge should be used.

The future should therefore not be viewed as humans versus artificial intelligence.

It should be viewed as humans empowered by artificial intelligence.

A New Form of Human Capability

For thousands of years, human capability was largely limited by the biological brain.

Individuals could learn only so much, remember only so much, analyze only so much information, and work only so many hours.

Artificial intelligence creates something historically unprecedented.

For the first time, individuals may have continuous access to intelligence that expands their own intellectual capacity.

A physician may effectively have thousands of medical textbooks available during every consultation.

An entrepreneur may have instantaneous access to market analysis, engineering expertise, legal information, and strategic modeling.

A student may have a tutor available twenty-four hours a day.

A scientist may collaborate with an analytical system capable of evaluating millions of possibilities.

A small business may possess capabilities once available only to enormous corporations.

In this way, artificial intelligence may become an extension of human cognition.

Democratization of Expertise

This may have enormous social consequences.

Historically, expertise has been scarce.

There are only so many physicians, lawyers, engineers, teachers, accountants, scientists, and consultants.

Artificial intelligence can reproduce portions of expert knowledge at extremely low marginal cost.

That means expertise could become dramatically more accessible.

A farmer could receive sophisticated agricultural advice.

A small entrepreneur could receive financial analysis.

A patient could better understand a medical diagnosis.

A student could learn advanced mathematics.

A nonprofit organization could use sophisticated strategic tools previously available only to multinational companies.

This democratization of expertise could increase economic opportunity around the world.

AI and Developing Countries

The effect could be particularly profound in developing countries.

Many regions do not lack intelligence or ambition.

They lack access.

Access to teachers.

Access to physicians.

Access to capital.

Access to professional expertise.

Access to information.

Artificial intelligence combined with inexpensive smartphones and global connectivity may dramatically reduce some of these barriers.

The next generation of innovators may increasingly emerge from places historically excluded from the world’s most advanced institutions.

AI could therefore contribute not only to technological transformation, but to global economic transformation.

Robotics Will Bring AI Into the Physical World

The next major stage of the revolution will occur as artificial intelligence increasingly controls physical machines.

Robots will become more capable in:

  • Manufacturing;
  • Warehouses;
  • Agriculture;
  • Construction;
  • Healthcare;
  • Elder care;
  • Home assistance;
  • Transportation;
  • Disaster response;
  • Exploration.

When intelligent software combines with increasingly capable robotics, machines will be able to perform not only cognitive tasks but physical ones.

This could greatly reduce the burden of dangerous, repetitive, and physically exhausting work.

It may also dramatically increase the productivity of the global economy.

Longevity and Human Health

One of the most exciting possibilities is the effect AI may have on healthy human lifespan.

Artificial intelligence could accelerate:

  • Drug discovery;
  • Genomic medicine;
  • Cancer detection;
  • Protein research;
  • Personalized treatment;
  • Preventive medicine;
  • Continuous monitoring.

Healthcare may gradually shift from treating disease after symptoms appear to identifying biological changes before the individual becomes seriously ill.

If that transformation occurs, AI may not simply make healthcare more efficient.

It could allow millions of people to live longer and healthier lives.

The Transformation of Creativity

Artificial intelligence will also affect art, writing, music, architecture, design, filmmaking, and other forms of creativity.

Some fear that this diminishes human creativity.

I see another possibility.

AI may dramatically lower the technical barriers separating imagination from creation.

A person with an idea for a movie may someday produce it without needing a traditional studio.

A child with musical imagination may compose orchestral music.

An entrepreneur may design a product without employing a large engineering organization.

A scientist may visualize theories that previously existed only mathematically.

Human creativity may actually expand because the tools available to express ideas become dramatically more powerful.

Society Will Have to Adapt

The transition will not be effortless.

Education systems will have to change.

Companies will have to retrain employees.

Governments will have to modernize regulations.

Universities will have to reconsider how knowledge is taught and evaluated.

Economic policies may have to evolve as productivity increases and traditional employment structures change.

There will undoubtedly be periods of disruption.

Every industrial revolution has produced them.

But disruption should not be confused with catastrophe.

The printing press disrupted scribes.

Industrial machinery disrupted traditional crafts.

Automobiles disrupted horse transportation.

Computers disrupted clerical work.

The internet disrupted entire industries.

Yet humanity ultimately became more capable.

Artificial intelligence will likely follow that historical pattern, although perhaps much more rapidly.

A Civilization of Greater Abundance

The deepest economic consequence of AI may ultimately be abundance.

Intelligence has historically been one of the most expensive resources in society.

Expertise costs money because highly trained people are scarce.

If intelligence becomes increasingly inexpensive and widely available, the cost of producing many goods and services could decline dramatically.

Software development may become cheaper.

Education may become more accessible.

Medical analysis may become less expensive.

Scientific research may accelerate.

Manufacturing productivity may increase.

Transportation may become more efficient.

Energy systems may become smarter.

Agriculture may become more productive.

This could produce enormous increases in global wealth.

From Survival to Fulfillment

For much of human history, civilization has been organized around survival.

  • Food.
  • Shelter.
  • Security.
  • Employment.
  • Health.

As technology increases productivity, humanity gradually gains the ability to devote more attention to higher aspirations.

  • Education.
  • Creativity.
  • Relationships.
  • Exploration.
  • Philanthropy.
  • Spirituality.
  • Scientific discovery.
  • Personal growth.
  • AI could accelerate that evolution.

The great promise of artificial intelligence is therefore not simply that machines become more intelligent.

It is that human beings may become more free to be human.

The Responsibility of Our Generation

Every transformational technology creates responsibility for the generation that first develops it.

Our responsibility is not to fear artificial intelligence into paralysis.

Nor should we embrace it without thought.

We should develop it with:

  • Ethical standards;
  • Transparency;
  • Human oversight;
  • Privacy protections;
  • Cybersecurity;
  • Appropriate regulation;
  • Widespread education;
  • Broad access.

We should make certain that the benefits of AI are distributed widely rather than concentrated among a small number of corporations or countries.

Above all, AI should remain a tool that expands human opportunity.

The Beginning of a New Civilization

When historians look back hundreds of years from now, they may divide human history into periods that came before artificial intelligence and after artificial intelligence, much as we now distinguish periods before and after industrialization or widespread electrification.

We are living at the beginning of that transition.

We should not underestimate its magnitude.

Electricity transformed the physical capabilities of civilization.

The internet connected human knowledge.

Artificial intelligence may now amplify human intelligence itself.

That could prove to be the most consequential transformation of all.

I do not believe the future of artificial intelligence should primarily be described as a doomsday story.

I believe it is fundamentally a story about expanding human capability.

There will be mistakes. There will be disruption. There will be legitimate risks that require thoughtful governance.

But the direction of technological progress is already clear.

The genie is out of the bottle.

Artificial intelligence will continue to evolve, and civilization will evolve with it.

The great opportunity before humanity is to make certain that this extraordinary technology allows people everywhere to live healthier, longer, more productive, more creative, and more meaningful lives.

If we succeed, future generations may look back upon the early twenty-first century and recognize this moment not as the beginning of mankind’s decline, but as the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter in human civilization.

A chapter in which intelligence became more abundant.

Knowledge became more accessible.

Human potential became less constrained.

And people gained something that civilization has always sought but rarely possessed in abundance:

the freedom and time to enjoy the beauty of life.
